Our Kanna Sample Pack is the perfect introduction to our premium Sceletium tortuosum extracts, allowing you to experience both the stimulating effects of our Rush and the calming effects of our Zen.

Each sample pack contains 500mg of extract, split into:

  • 250mg Rush Extract (5% Total Alkaloids) – Our stimulating extract, ideal for workouts, motivation, socialising, and periods of intense focus and energy.

  • 250mg Zen Extract (7% Total Alkaloids) – Our most calming extract, ideal for relaxation, unwinding, and managing everyday stress.

  • A double sided spoon for accurate dosing 5mg and 15mg

  • A leaflet explaining what kanna is and how to best use the extracts

  • A silica pack to keep the extracts dry

Both extracts contain the same three primary alkaloids, but in different proportions, producing distinct effects.

You can also mix Rush and Zen together to create an experience somewhere between the two! By adjusting the ratio, you can customise the balance between stimulation and relaxation to suit your preferences.

Alkaloid Profiles

Rush Extract – 5% Total Alkaloids

Our Rush Extract is formulated to deliver a stimulating, uplifting experience, making it particularly popular for physical activity, productivity, and social situations.

Total Alkaloid Content = 5%

Of these alkaloids:

  • 80% Mesembrine – Our primary stimulating alkaloid, associated with serotonin reuptake inhibition and Monoamine release by via VMAT2

  • 10% Mesembrenone – A more calming alkaloid associated with serotonin reuptake inhibition and PDE4 inhibition.

  • 10% Delta-7-Mesembrenone – An alkaloid associated with a more relaxing overall profile.

Rush is particularly suited to those who enjoy an energetic, uplifting experience.

Zen Extract – 7% Total Alkaloids

Our Zen Extract is formulated for a more relaxing and balanced experience, with higher proportions of the alkaloids mesembrenone and delta-7mesembrenone associated with calming effects.

Total Alkaloid Content = 7%

Of these alkaloids:

  • 50% Mesembrine – Provides the uplifting component of the extract.

  • 25% Mesembrenone – Associated with serotonin reuptake inhibition and PDE4 inhibition, contributing to Zen's more calming character.

  • 25% Delta-7-Mesembrenone – Contributes to Zen's distinctive alkaloid profile and is associated with relaxing effects.

Zen is particularly popular with those looking to unwind, relax, and enjoy a calmer experience.

Mixing Rush & Zen – Find Your Perfect Balance

One of the biggest advantages of our Sample Pack is the ability to combine Rush and Zen to create your own personalised experience.

Since both extracts contain the same three primary alkaloids in different proportions, mixing them allows you to adjust the overall alkaloid profile.

For example:

  • 75% Rush + 25% Zen: A predominantly stimulating blend, with a greater contribution from Zen's calming alkaloids.

  • 50% Rush + 50% Zen: A balanced combination, positioned between the stimulating Rush and relaxing Zen profiles.

  • 25% Rush + 75% Zen: A predominantly calming blend that retains some of Rush's stimulating character.

Because Zen has a higher total alkaloid concentration, even equal quantities of the two extracts will contain slightly more alkaloids contributed by Zen.

We recommend trying each extract individually before experimenting with mixtures, so you can appreciate their different characteristics.

The precise effects of different mixtures have not been established in clinical studies, and individual experiences may vary.

Dosage

First-Time Use

As these are concentrated extracts, we recommend beginning with a small amount.

For first-time users, start with approximately 15–25mg of either Rush or Zen, taken orally.

This allows you to assess your individual sensitivity before considering a larger amount on another occasion.

Please note:

  • Our extracts are highly concentrated and may produce noticeable effects at relatively small quantities.

  • A level compact scoop may contain approximately 50–75mg, depending on how tightly the powder is packed.

  • A milligram scale is recommended for accurate measurement.

  • When combining extracts, the dosage refers to their combined weight, not the quantity of each individual extract.

  • Avoid repeatedly increasing the dose during your first experience.

The extracts can be mixed into food or drinks or placed directly in the mouth. They have a naturally bitter flavour due to their alkaloid content.

Finding Your Preferred Experience

Individual responses to Sceletium can vary considerably.

Some users prefer Rush during the day when they want a more stimulating experience, while others prefer Zen when relaxing in the evening.

Experimenting cautiously with the relative proportions of the two extracts can help you discover which alkaloid profile suits your preferences.

Higher doses are not necessarily more effective and may increase the likelihood of unwanted effects.

Potential Benefits

Sceletium tortuosum has a long history of traditional use in South Africa and has attracted increasing scientific interest due to its unique alkaloids.

Research into standardised Sceletium extracts has explored their potential effects on:

  • Mood and emotional well-being

  • Stress and relaxation

  • Attention and cognitive performance

  • Mental flexibility

  • Everyday feelings of calmness

The effects may vary according to the alkaloid profile, amount consumed, and individual sensitivity.

Although some small human studies have produced encouraging findings, further research is needed, particularly on highly concentrated extracts such as Rush and Zen.

Side Effects

Sceletium is generally well tolerated in the limited human studies conducted so far, although concentrated extracts may produce stronger effects.

Potential unwanted effects include:

  • Nausea

  • Headaches

  • Dizziness

  • Digestive discomfort

  • Restlessness or overstimulation, particularly with stimulating extracts

The likelihood of discomfort may increase with dose.

If you experience unwanted effects, discontinue use and allow them to subside. Seek medical advice for severe or persistent symptoms.

Important Precautions

Do not combine Sceletium with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, or other medications that significantly affect serotonin without medical guidance.

Because Sceletium alkaloids influence serotonin signalling, combining them with serotonergic medications may increase the risk of adverse interactions, potentially including serotonin syndrome.

Sceletium should not be used to manage antidepressant withdrawal or replace prescribed medication without the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional. Under professional guidance it can be safe and effective to use during pharmaceutical antidepressant withdrawal.
